Abstract

School shootings are happening more frequently throughout the entire United States. The University of Texas tower shooting, Virginia Tech University, Columbine High School and Sandy Hook Elementary School are some well-known school shootings due to the amount of media coverage and severity of the shootings. The University of Texas tower shooting occurred on August 1, 1996, killed eighteen people, and injured thirty-one. The Virginia Tech University shooting occurred on April 16, 2007 with Seung- Hui Cho killing thirty-two people. The Columbine High School shooting occurred on April 20, 1999 ending with Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold whom killed fifteen committing suicide afterwards. The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut with Adam Lanza killing twenty-eight people. A posable question to the public may be “Why do school shootings occur and what are some possible ways to prevent school shootings?” Upon my completing research on this topic, I have determines that the major reasons school shootings occur is because of Serious Mental Illness or better known as SMI, violent video games and bullying.
