Abstract
Substance Abuse and the Older Adult

This research attempt to help bring to light the growing problem of substance abuse and the older adult. It briefly touches on some of the obstacle and options for identifying and treating the older adult with the misuse, abuse and dependency of alcohol, prescription medications, over-the-counter medications and some common illicit drugs. It touches on the importance of further research needed as well as educating staff members, providers, the patient and their families and those in close contact with the abuser. Some commonly used tools are included in the article.
