Dealing With Academic Honesty Issues and International Students

Landon C. Clark, Murray State University

Abstract

This presentation will focus on the identification and reconciliation of academic honesty issues with international students. As international diversity increases in our classrooms, educators must adapt approaches to dealing with the various educational backgrounds international students bring to their new learning environment. While the deep cultural and educational histories of international students provide a robust learning environment, issues can arise related to cross-cultural differences in academic honesty. Definitions of cheating and plagiarizing can vary depending on cultural and educational differences, and it is increasingly important for educators to be aware of these differences and how to react accordingly. It is vitally important that efforts to acclimate international students to American educational programs provide adequate preparation for students in terms of expectations for academic honesty in their educational pursuits. Examples of academic honesty issues and strategies for dealing with cheating and/or plagiarism will be discussed in order to provide educators with additional skills to assist international students in being successful in their respective academic pursuits.
