Abstract/Description

I will examine the influence that the Nazi regime had on the lives of four composers: Richard Wagner, Arnold Schoenberg, Richard Strauss, and Benjamin Britten. Because of the racial discrimination and the anti-Sematic views of Nazism, each of these composers were affected by this movement in various ways based on their backgrounds. By analyzing the history surrounding these composers, I can further understand the meaning and influence that the Nazi rule had in their compositions. In addition, I will compose a four-movement vocal piece where each movement relates to one of the composers and connects to their biography. I will be setting text from authors whose lives were affected similarly to that of the highlighted composer in each movement to further convey the impact of Nazism.
