Abstract/Description

Throughout the U.S. many of the classic novels that have been taught in our high schools for years are being questioned on their appropriateness for students. Many of these novels have been banned and/or censored by school districts. In my thesis, I would like to analyze these novels in question, the different reasons that novels are banned, the idea of censoring these novels and the effect teaching or not teaching these novels has on the students in different districts throughout the state of Kentucky. I will cover some of the scholarship that exists on the history of book challenges and the effect the Banned Books movement has had on education. I will also present my own research on which books are still being taught locally and what local high school teachers find to be appropriate reasons for banning books.
