Abstract/Description

Urinary tract infections are the most common hospital acquired infections; 80% of these infections are attributed to an indwelling catheter. Hospitals around the U.S have been implementing policies and procedures in efforts to decrease the number of patients that are receiving catheters, as well as decreasing the number of patients who are affected by catheter associated urinary tract infections. The recommendations discussed are the implementation of a reminder system to allow nurses and physician’s to acknowledge that patient’s still have a catheter intact, as well as ensure that the proper hospital criteria is met to continue use. A revision within the policy was also recommended to ensure that urinary catheter insertion and maintenance were listed in step by step description.
