Abstract

Daniel W. Irvan describes the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Kentucky Dam project and its impac t on Marshall County, Kentucky. He describes farm life and economic conditions in Marshall County prior to the construction of Kentucky Dam. He explains the hiring process performed by the TVA, the duties he was assigned and work conditions on the jobsite. The interview concludes with an examination of the economic impact of the project on Marshall County and the surrounding area.

Biographical/Historical Note

Daniel W. Irvan was born on September 12th, 1919 in Hardin, Marshall County, Kentucky. HE farmed until 1941 when he began to work for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) on the Kentucky Dam project. Irvan continued to work for the TVA until he was drafted into the Army on January 18th, 1943. After being discharged, he returned to farming on a small scale while also working at a plant in Calvert City. He retired in 1980 and died on May 14th, 2003.
