Abstract/Description

Gender is something than many individuals take for granted, but the ramifications and norms permeate daily life. There are individuals differences in the way that people choose to “do gender” that are dictated primarily by societal norms. These can pop up in surprising settings, including fantasy and make believe. This study uses participant observation to examine two different Dungeons & Dragons groups to see the ways in which gender is performed and constructed through the characters. Results seem to indicate that even in a world where individuals can be and do anything that they want, there still tends to be adherence to the gender norms and conventions that are present in modern western society.
