Abstract/Description

Regardless of the reason that a person is admitted to an inpatient setting within the hospital, patients are at risk for pressure ulcer development and it is imperative that nurses and unlicensed assistive personnel work to prevent the formation of pressure ulcers. There are detrimental impacts on the patient in regards to increased risk for infection, increased length of stay, increased health care cost, increased pain, and an overall negative experience. The use of prophylactic dressings have been used for a couple of years now; however, the use of polyurethane dressings are suggested by new evidence based research to become the dressing of choices for the inpatient setting.
