Abstract/Description

Pain is the number one factor that causes patients to seek health care. Although pain is prevalent, oligoanalgesia has been a reoccurring issue due to ineffective pain assessment, time restraints, and reluctance to medicate. The long-term effects that stem from the under-management of pain result in detrimental health outcomes due to a reluctance to follow medical direction. Studies have shown that time to analgesia in the ED is vastly decreased by nurse-initiated pain management protocols, thus raising patient satisfaction and adherence to medical direction.
