Abstract/Description

As nursing students and future nurses, it is important to always use the best evidence practice to promote patient care. One issue we saw within our clinical rotation was the rate of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTIs). Nurses are using sterile technique and satisfactory perineal care when placing a Foley catheter, yet infections still occur. Knowing this, we knew there was something else that could be done to help lower the rate of these infections. We spent months researching and found that behavioral changes will help decrease these rates. The key to decrease infection rates is early removal of Foley catheters. The more frequent assessment for need will allow nurses to remove Foley sooner, in return lowering the rate of CAUTIs in the hospital.
