Abstract/Description

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are an issue in hospitals in our area and around the country. They are common, and can lead to more serious problems than the patient already has. Research has shown evidence that avoiding indwelling catheters unless medically necessary is one solution to reduce CAUTI. Bundling catheter care, and using a checklist is another solution that evidence has backed up. Lastly, institutions that have a nurse-driven protocol that allows nurses to remove catheters without a doctor’s order if deemed necessary also have lower CAUTI incidence.
