Abstract/Description

ECT therapy is used in mental health patients who have severe depression, treatment-resistant depression, severe mania, catatonia, and agitation/aggression in dementia patients. This therapy is performed when other treatment options have been unsuccessful. There are many benefits to this treatment option, but often patients experience postictal agitation and altered hemodynamic responses. Because of this, more time may need to be devoted to these patients in PACU setting following treatment. This is a safety concern for nurses and patients because of the added stress and may influence the quality of care an ECT patient.
