In and Out of Control: Self Portraits, Setbacks, and Resilience
Abstract
This series of paintings is a visual aid that helps me tell a story that I normally would not be capable of doing. These paintings have become a major part in allowing me to gain more agency and become more self-aware in all aspects of my state of being. In these self-portraits, I have processed not only the negatives of feeling out of control and self-deprecating in dark moments, but also the significance of brief periods of happiness and relief from anxiety that can be found in everyday life, even when they stem from departures and setbacks in my original plans.
