Building and Maintaining a Pitcher's Mound

Abstract

Because of its importance to the game of baseball, the focal point of any field is the pitcher’s mound. Proper construction of a pitcher’s mound involves a layout process to define the key components of the pitcher’s mound itself. During the construction phase, the plateau is established, the pitcher’s plate is set in place, and the front slope is established before finally shaping the remaining portion of the mound. The mound should be finished with a layer of calcined clay and covered with a tarp regularly to control moisture in the mound materials. After each use, the mound should be properly repaired and maintained to prepare it for the next use. Quality construction combined with regular maintenance provides longevity and consistency for a pitcher’s mound.
