The Creative Process: Transparency In Composing Music
Abstract
Often, when we discuss creativity, it is from an outsider perspective where analysis and our best interpretations are what guides our understanding. This is a valuable method of understanding and connecting to music and art. However, the aim of this paper is to describe the intentions and creative process behind my own compositions directly. I believe that composing is just as varied in its processes as the music it produces, and it would prove valuable to show the time, tedium, and intention of each composition. Each of my compositions will feature different dynamics, moods, and instrumentation, yet should all have some cohesive theme that I will detail here and in my writing on each track. I will describe the software and mixing techniques that I used in creating these pieces and describe how I utilized them. I believe that this will give a greater understanding of the work that many musicians put in to create music that may not sound overly complex but is nonetheless the result of many painstaking hours.
