The Benefits of Participating in Sports

Abstract

Being involved in sports is so much more than just being an athlete. Being involved in sports shapes a person in more ways than many may realize, especially throughout adolescent years. This paper will focus on how sports participation affects an individual, highlighting the benefits of being involved in sports, especially at a young age. With sports comes injuries. With the conclusion of sports participation being crucial for development in many areas, this paper also highlights the importance of injury prevention and the long and short-term effects of injuries on athletes. The purpose of this research is to inform parents, teachers, coaches, and the public on the significance of a child being involved in sports. The benefits range from improving education, mental health, physical health, communication skills, social status, self-confidence, and community involvement; all characteristics that will continue benefiting the individual throughout life and contribute to their success. If the public is knowledgeable on this topic, children may be given more opportunities to improve their development throughout many aspects. In addition, injury prevention and treatment plans will be taken more seriously so that athletes can continue to benefit from sports participation and hopefully minimize their chances of injury.
