The Holistic Benefits of Exercise

Abstract

Abstract

Exercise is good for us, that’s common knowledge. But how far down that "good" does it go? In this comprehensive review, exercise’s multifaceted health benefits are explored. Not just in terms of the obvious physiological ones, but also in the psychological, emotional and social realms as well. Exercise unlocks the capabilities of our organs and maximizes the synergy between the systems of our bodies. This means more physical stamina, more mobility, and fewer chronic diseases.

Additionally, exercise is a strong stressbuster and emotional self-control mechanism through the release of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters and lowering stress hormones. Exercise keeps you feeling steady and strong. It enables you to develop an awareness, reduce the noise in your mind, and experience presence, which can improve your ability to think clearly and be emotionally centered.

But there is more to exercise than physical health. Exercise is a medium of socializing, feeling connected and forging social bonds. From team sports, or the shared fun of a group exercise class, to simply walking with a friend, exercise opens up more ways to meet people and have adventures.

More than physical, mental and social gains, exercise can be a form of self-realization. As we work our body and brain harder, we learn what’s right, wrong and good. That self-awareness can drive one toward an enhanced and more harmonized life.

It is argued in this review that exercise’s role in improving health is powerful and complex, showing that it works on both the body, but also the mind and the soul. Exercise, after all, could lead to a healthier, more satisfying and meaningful life.
