Leadership as the Link Between Employee Well-Being and High-Quality Patient Care
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of leadership in healthcare. Not only does effective leadership affect the direct team of the leader but also supports the organizational culture of the organization. This paper demonstrates different types of effective leadership in the healthcare setting and a number of challenges that a healthcare leader may face. This essay exhibits the causes and effects of employee burnout and retention and recruitment strategies. It will go on to discuss some challenges affecting healthcare leadership including managing a multigenerational work force, implementation of new technology and governmental and policy regulation changes. Later, demonstrated is the importance of manager-employee relationships and how the relationship affects employee morale and burnout. Since leadership is seen at multiple levels throughout an organization, the literature will also explain how organizational culture affects the employee wellbeing and how leadership can foster a strong organizational culture. Lastly, the paper illustrates how effective leadership within the organization not only positively affects the employee experience but also supports positive patient outcomes.
