Transnational Volunteers and the French Resistance
Project Abstract
My research examines the role of transnational fighters in the French Resistance, with particular emphasis on individuals from Spain, Germany, and Italy —and to a lesser extent refugees from fascist regimes in the Balkans— who participated in resistance networks and grassroots organizations between 1933 and 1945. While historians have long acknowledged the importance of foreign fighters in the Resistance, especially within organizations such as Main-d’œuvre immigrée (FTP-MOI), their experiences and influence have often been absorbed by broader national narratives, no doubt due to the cultural weight the Resistance holds within French historiography and national myth. This project seeks to expand on their political motivations, social backgrounds, impact on French politics before and during the Nazi invasion, and their material contribution to the success or failure of armed resistance efforts. This will be done by assessing archival documentation produced by resistance organizations, journals from individual fighters, and postwar state investigations.
