Abstract/Description

An examination of early childhood and early childhood music education, music teaching approaches, cognition, child development, and curriculum design related research served as the origin for this project. Based on the music learning theory of Dr. Edwin Gordon, the researcher created a music curriculum for two-year-old children to enhance musical understanding, develop an appreciation of music, and aid in cognitive development. Various musical activities and listening exercises were selected to enhance the musical learning sequences prescribed by Gordon. Musical selections were chosen from Disney songs, traditional children’s songs, and Classical instrumental and choral listening examples for both their musical enjoyment and teaching benefits. This curriculum was designed to be taught Monday through Friday in a two-year-old daycare classroom for children with and without mental or physical disabilities over the course of one calendar year. Future research studies should continue to address the design, testing, and implementation of both this curriculum, as well as a complete preschool music curriculum for children from birth through age five.
