Abstract/Description
While working in the healthcare setting, there is always a need to improve infection rates and decrease the number of readmission rates by improved hand hygiene. Hand hygiene is the single most important factor that decreases the rate of infection and illness. With the use of hand washing, regardless of patient contact or not, the majority of employees within the health care facility can help to decrease infection rates, readmission rates, and incidences of communicable diseases. The importance of my project is to stress the impact of hand hygiene and emphasize ways to increase the rate of compliance. Research shows that with the proper use of hand hygiene the microbial count and rate of infection decrease. The research also shows that if hand hygiene is preformed first thing in the morning and right before patient contact with povidone iodine and then using alcohol based hand rubs throughout the day, then the microbial count significantly decreases greater than it would with either procedure alone.
