Abstract/Description
Catheters play a very important role in the healthcare setting. They remove urine from the bladder when the bladder has no way of emptying itself. Although, this sterile procedure helps the human body in elimination it also can hurt the body by causing infection. Catheter associate urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) make up the largest portion of healthcare associated infections (HAI). CAUTIs can lead to serious complications including cystitis, pyelonephritis, gram-negative bacteremia, prostatitis, epididymitis, septic arthritis, endophthalmitis, urosepsis, and even death (Finan, 2012).
