Abstract/Description

Blood transfusions are a vital life-saving measure. Nurses play an important role in ensuring safe administration and patient education during each blood transfusion. This project is designed to identify the shortcomings in different parts of the blood transfusion process, specifically in the different roles of the nurse. After finding that the evidence states nurses should remain in the patient room for direct observation for the first 15 minutes after starting the transfusion, recommendations were made. The evidence also found that nurse’s education was lacking in knowledge of correct administration procedures and identifying adverse reactions. Recommendations were also made to improve nursing education of blood transfusions in general.
