Abstract/Description
The role of a nurse extends beyond their mandate to ensure proper recovery of the patient. They also have to work together with physicians to ensure they give the doctor the support they need to help the said patient to recovery. Sometimes patients require surgery and the nurse’s presence is highly instrumental in seeing to the smooth operation of the surgical procedure. Among the many roles of the nurse, such a process includes calling for a surgical time out. During the time out, the team in the operating room goes through the final checklist to ensure that they have the right patient and conduct the surgery as it should be. However, recent events within community hospitals have raised eyebrows on the efficiency of the surgical time-out process. Surgical safety checklists are an ideal strategy to ensures patient safety during the surgical process and we must accurately use this list to the expected capacity.
