Abstract/Description

This presentation is an evidence-based project discussing the issue of unnecessary blood transfusions in the United States. The United States has an incredibly higher percentage of blood transfusions per year compared to other countries. The purpose of this project was to determine if implementation of strict protocols and a review board would lower the rate of blood transfusions in hospitals without increasing mortality and/or complication rates. The presentation uses research from a variety of different retrospective studies that proves strict protocols and review boards, along with nursing education, can lower the rates of unnecessary blood transfusions without having a negative impact on nursing care.
