Abstract/Description
The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between elevation and the mean stream flow along the Iowa River using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) including several geospatial datasets. Datasets were downloaded from EarthExplorer of the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The medium stream flow along the Iowa River and its mouth, at the Mississippi River was extracted from the datasets. Using Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and hillshade, the relevant elevation was compared to sites downstream to see if streamflow is impacted by elevation. Each site was examined determined based off the USGS stream gauges. Other water sources, such as creeks and rivers, into the stream flow of the Iowa River was taken into consideration. In the end, I would like to find out what impact, if any, on elevation to stream flow such as, at higher elevation, if the stream flow was faster/slower that at a lower elevation.
