Abstract/Description

In this session, students will present their journalism projects that rely on oral history interviews. The project focused on public education before the era of standardized testing.

Students conducted oral history interviews using quality audio recording equipment as part of an intensive focus on public education reporting. They investigated and reported the issues and challenges facing public education. The individuals who were interviewed shared their memories and stories.

This long-term project enabled students to experience oral history as a technique for news-gathering and reporting.

Oral histories, interview transcripts, news stories and photographs are stored online at kyeducationstories.omeka.net as exhibit items.

This community engagement project is funded by three sources: the MSU Faculty Innovation Initiative Grant, MSU Bring Learning to Life Grant, and the Kappa Delta Pi Classroom Teacher Grant.
