Abstract/Description

Music is thought to be a form of both art and therapy that can be given holistically meaning that it can be used to assist the body both emotionally and physically. Through an individual’s daily routine, they may choose to listen to music to pass time, relieve stress, reflect on past memories, or to get themselves prepared for some sort of event in their lives. Another unique aspect of music is that it is used with most if not all cultures meaning that it crosses cultural boundaries which can be beneficial for healthcare providers that see numerous types of cultures on a daily basis. With this being said, music can be used in numerous therapeutic ways that can help a wide variety of patients that seek healthcare in both hospitals and private practice settings. Some examples of music being used therapeutically with healthcare include reducing stress and anxiety, being used as a distraction, promoting comfort in patients, and many positive outlooks within healthcare.
