Abstract/Description
The purpose of this study was to see what the benefits were of minimizing interruptions in patients sleep for the duration of the hospital stay. Multiple sleep interruptions throughout the night and continuing throughout the length of the patient’s stay can lead to sleep deprivation causing further negative health outcomes. The major findings discovered was minimizing sleep disturbances may affect the patient’s need for more as needed pain medication. For a patient to be approved to have minimal sleep disturbance they must meet inclusion certain criteria and not have any of the exclusion conditions, as well as the patient must approve of this intervention. To reduce sleep disturbances during the patient’s hospital visit, nurses can to do a few interventions such as clustering patient care, any environmental changes the patient wishes (light, temperature, sound), and providing medications the patient may need to better their sleep (pain, nausea, or sleeping medications).
