Abstract/Description
The terms “raunch culture” and “porno-chic” are used to represent a new cultural shift in society where women endorse and proclaim highly sexualized messages (e.g., wearing a t-shirt that announces one’s sexual proclivity or “porn star”; Barton, 2011). Raunch culture changes the behavior of young women today, yet few known psychological studies have examined this new phenomenon. This study examined potential correlates of raunch culture such as Greek membership identification, parenting style, attitudes towards women, stripping behaviors, sociosexuality, sexual opinions, and relationship attachment. It was expected that individuals who identify with Greek life, would have higher endorsements of raunch culture. A survey of undergraduate Psychology students (N = 111), who were primarily female (n = 75), Caucasian (n = 91), Christian (n = 77), and an average age of 19.21 (SD = 2.26), showed raunch culture is positively correlated with attitudes toward women (r = 0.347, p ﹤0.001), opinions of pornography (r = 0.428, p ﹤0.001), opinions of pleasure (r = 0.483, p ﹤0.001), opinions of homosexuality (r = 0.435, p ﹤0.001) and sociosexual orientation (r = 0.472, p ﹤0.001), and negatively correlated with religiosity (r = -0.404, p ﹤0.001). This suggests that students who were more accepting of raunch culture behaviors also had more profeminist attitudes, were more accepting of pornography, sexual pleasure, and homosexuality, and were also more open to non-traditional sex. Those who were less accepting of raunch culture behaviors tended to have a stronger identification and involvement level with their religion.
