Abstract/Description

Sarah J. Maas, a well-known American fantasy author has taken the book community by storm through her relatable characters and dynamic world-building within her series Throne of Glass, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and Crescent City. Many readers relate to her writing because of the realistic experiences the characters go through such as sexual assault, emotional abuse, and the questioning of their sexual and self-identity. The purpose of this presentation is to explore a critical evaluation of mental health, gender, and sexuality through the first novel, A Court of Thorns and Roses, by using complex reading and academic articles as well as the feminist, gender, and marxist lenses. These themes will be discussed by looking at the power structure, lives of the characters, and overall plot line of the novel. By doing so, I will also demonstrate how this series has had an impact on the lives of the readers.
