Abstract/Description

Queer Themes in Horror Literature

Nova Faust

Horror as a genre, both in literature then film, has always used queer themes and tropes presented through heterosexual stories to give the sense of otherness that the genre uses to make its stories unsettling. The term queer here refers to any gender identity or sexual orientation outside of heterosexual and cisgender. In the anthology that I have put together, I will be analyzing how horror thorough the years had borrowed from queer culture and had found a fanbase in queer communities that could relate to the stories that were being told. I have chosen 7 short horror stories that feature queer characters experiencing these tropes through these stories. It will discuss how these stories are made more powerful by having queer characters to tell these stories, and how they both make these tropes even more obvious, while exploring them in ways that can only be achieved in using this framing.
