Abstract/Description
Nurses provide direct patient care with shifts that most often last longer than twelve hours. High acuity of patients combined with the current nursing shortage leaves nurses often overwhelmed their entire shift. This often leads to missed meal and rest breaks. The break periods nurses are able to take often are cut short due to patient needs. These missed breaks often have a detrimental effect on nursing staff as well as patients. Missed breaks have been seen to lead to missed nursing care and acute burnout among nurses. It is crucial that hospitals have policies in place that ensure uninterrupted and adequate meal and rest breaks for bedside nurses.
