Abstract/Description
Adverse Childhood Experiences and Emotional Intimacy in Adults
Adverse childhood experiences have been defined as traumatic experiences before age 18. These experiences include psychological, physical, or sexual abuse; violence against mother, or living with household members who were substance abusers, mentally ill, suicidal, or previously imprisoned. It has been found that adverse childhood experiences and neglectful parenting styles can have many negative effects on someone's life such as decreased emotional closeness or emotional functioning. Emotional intimacy is a form of intimacy that plays an important role in mental health and how satisfying a romantic relationship may feel. There are limited studies that have looked at what effects adverse childhood experiences and neglectful parenting may have on emotional intimacy in adulthood. The current study examines how adverse childhood experiences or neglectful parenting styles affect emotional intimacy in adulthood. We hypothesized that high levels of adverse childhood experiences or neglectful parenting will be associated with lower levels of emotional intimacy among adults. Currently, data collection is ongoing using the SONA database, in which 66 participants have completed the survey.
