Abstract/Description

Improved Patient Outcomes with Continuous Video Monitoring

Objective

The use of human sitters has been the normal policy in hospitals across the United States for years. Recently, there has been an introduction to remote video monitoring systems that are aimed at replacing the need for human sitters. Our goal is to change the policy of a local hospital in our area to adjust their stance on human sitters and implement remote video monitoring.

Methods/Results

Our method of accomplishing this involved a PowerPoint presentation and an evidence-based practice paper with three different scholarly research articles that have been peer-reviewed. We presented our updated policy to seven different manager-level employees at a local hospital to persuade them to update their policy. The results that we had collected to present were based on multiple quasi-experimental studies with both qualitative and quantitative data. The studies were based in over 20 hospitals across the United States. The findings were in the aspect that remote video monitoring is a more cost-effective approach to safety for patients, improving nursing burnout, and reducing patient falls in hospitals.

Conclusions

After presenting our updated policy and evidence for the implementation of remote video monitoring, we were applauded by the presentees. They were interested in our policy and its findings and planned on approaching other higher-level employees to hopefully implement our policy into their hospital's culture.

Key words: patient safety, nursing burnout, fall prevention, cost-effectiveness, patient satisfaction, remote video monitoring
