Abstract/Description
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections remain one of the most preventable, yet persistent, healthcare associated infections in hospitals today. The evidence shows that strict adherence to sterile technique during indwelling catheter insertion is one of the most effective ways to reduce CAUTI rates, and a great way to promote adherence to sterile technique is by implementing a two nurse indwelling catheter insertion policy. Implementing this new policy will promote adherence to sterile technique, accountability, and teamwork. These values all align with Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring by protecting patient dignity and promoting patient safety. Adopting this new policy demonstrates a commitment to bettering patient safety and following evidence based practice at this hospital by minimizing catheter associated urinary tract infections.
