Abstract/Description

  • I will share a unit plan that uses Artist Trading Cards to help elementary students explore what personality is, study their own personalities, and express their personalities visually. Artist Trading Cards are unique artworks the size of baseball cards that are traded with other artists. By giving and receiving ATCs, elementary students can participate in this contemporary art making practice. Through the unit, students learn what artist trading cards are and how they represent the personality of artists. Students discover the origins of artist trading cards, learn about M. Vinci Stirnrmann - the artist who invented ATCs, and analyze exemplar Artist Trading Cards. Student then learn how to make ATCs and experiment with three different art making techniques. Lastly, students develop their own trading cards and have a trading event of their own.
