Abstract/Description

"Using Point Cloud LiDAR to study landfill Characteristics and Possible Environmental Effects"

Landfills can have short and long term harsh impact on the environment around them. These problems can range from air pollution, soil health, water pollution, and visual and health impacts. All these problems can cause serious long term damage on the environment. Some of these problems can be difficult to monitor from the ground, so the application of remote sensing can be a handy tool. In this study Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) was used to create 3D profiles of a large landfill in Aurora Colorado to help study different characteristics of the landfill. Most attributes looked at in this study were focused on runoff and how that affected local streams and the environment. Also aerial, and satellite images were processed to help show total extend of the landfill, and also help aiding in studying the environment around the landfill. Results showed that around the landfill in Aurora that there were several places that runoff could reach a local tributary. As far as location of the landfill the aerial images showed that the landfill was placed very close to a school and housing development.
