Abstract/Description
The acute hospital unit can be an unfamiliar and stressful for older patients with impaired cognition, rendering them prone to agitation and resistive to care. Extensive research has been done to study the effects of music therapy on these patients and it has proven that music therapy holds much promise to improve mood and engagement in the acute care setting (Cheong et al, 2016). Music therapy is not going to change the course of the disease, but it will allow the person to temporarily engage and be much more capable of communicating more clearly (Hanser, 2018). If you can find a way in the healthcare setting to make your job easier and the patients more comfortable, why don’t you? There is plenty of research and literature out there that supports music therapy and helps to possibly tackle these issues head on.
