Abstract/Description
Rejecting Equality: An Explanation of the Connection between Toxic Masculinity and the AfD
Though toxic masculinity has always existed, the term “toxic masculinity” only came around less than 40 years ago because this is a new social idea. Toxic masculinity refers to traditionally masculine norms that are problematic and damaging for society because they cause men to view and treat themselves and others as less than they deserve. Society, as a whole needs, to combat toxic masculinity, but it can do this, society must have an understanding of how it operates in the society, which this paper will help to provide. One way that toxic masculinity operates in German culture, for example, is politically. There is a political party, the AfD or Alternative für Deutschland, that is rapidly gaining power and support in Germany and whose ideologies and beliefs share striking similarities with the problematic norms of toxic masculinity. There are many similarities between toxic masculinity and the beliefs of the AfD, but two similarities that contribute to the social issues are that both groups have a tendency to resort to violence and that both groups display hatred towards people who are not cis-gender males. This paper compares the patterns of toxic masculinity in Germany to the beliefs and history of the AfD, demonstrating how harmful both of these groups are towards society. The goal of this paper is to give a better understanding of the prevalence and impact of toxic masculinity in Germany, specifically as it relates to politics.
