Abstract/Description

Technological advancements in the past couple of decades have enhanced the way languages are learned. More specifically, the way vocabulary is studied has been improved with the use of online programs, modes of online communication, etc. The overall effects that technology has on language learning is a widely researched topic. In this paper, I study the effects of technology on learning vocabulary. Among the concepts and skills that are needed to learn a language, this study focuses on vocabulary acquisition due to its magnitude and importance of mastery. Vocabulary acquisition is explored from the perspective of intermediate to advanced students learning Spanish as a second language. While the focus is on learning Spanish vocabulary, the learning strategies mentioned also apply to learning other languages. To examine the way technology has improved learning vocabulary this study takes a descriptive and experiential approach. I describe programs and systems used to learn vocabulary, including systems such as augmented reality and speech recognition. This study then analyzes the methods used to teach vocabulary in popular programs such as Duolingo and Rosetta Stone. I argue that the use of technology boosts efficiency and engagement for independent language learners acquiring and maintaining vocabulary in their target language. By taking a closer look at how current technology enhances language learning, students of languages will be able to utilize online resources to their maximum potential.
