Abstract/Description

Sepsis remains a significant complication in the healthcare field throughout the United States, especially in Kentucky. Earlier recognition can lead to quicker treatment and positive patient outcomes. The purpose of this research is to determine the benefits of using sepsis screening tools and how it can increase the quality of patient care. While further research needs to be conducted to determine the optimal screening tool, studies show a significant change in patient outcomes when these tools are implemented early on in the infection process. Tools that include laboratory values and level of consciousness in addition to vital signs appear to be the most effective. Identifying early signs and symptoms of sepsis help the healthcare team create safe and quality care specific to the patient. Every patient in the hospital is at risk for sepsis, so it is important for all patients to be screened for it rather than only screening for patients that have already been confirmed to have an infection.
