Abstract/Description

“An Ergonomic Assessment of Grout Pump Operators”

Authors: Matison Bentley, Harry Anderson, and Drew Toeben

The construction industry typically consists of many jobs with physically demanding and strenuous activities that can increase the likelihood of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). The Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks MSDs as a leading workplace hazard in the construction industry every year. Recent studies indicate common construction tasks similar to lifting grout bags into a grout pump can significantly increase the risk of developing MSDs. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the ergonomic risks associated with lifting grout bags using the 3-Dimensional Static Strength Prediction Program (3DSSPP), a discomfort survey, and the revised NIOSH lifting equation (NLE). Further recommendations and potential solutions to mitigate ergonomic risk factors are presented.
