Abstract/Description

For residents of Kentucky, the occurrence of river flooding is a phenomenon that many have experienced firsthand. Various factors affect the impact a flood has, such as manmade impoundments, precipitation or the amount of vegetation coverage in a watershed. This study focused on how seasonal vegetation coverage affected the severity of a river flood.

Aerial imagery from flooding events along the Green River since 2001 were compared to normal stages using ArcGIS Pro to establish the extent of said flood events. Seasonal vegetation coverage was divided into vegetation bare and vegetation seasonal. Flood events that were compared were determined by both having similar prior precipitation totals. Imagery from near the date of flooding was used to determine whether seasonal vegetation coverage was present or not.

After the analysis was complete, a correlation was observed when comparing the lack of seasonal vegetation to the extent of a flood. Of the flooding events compared, the coverage of them was larger when no seasonal vegetation was present.
