Abstract/Description

Necrotizing soft tissue infection (NSTI) is a rare but possibly fatal disease. It affects the deeper layers of adipose tissue, fascia, or muscle, and are typically caused by bacterial toxins. They are characterized clinically by a precipitous disease progression with significant local tissue damage. Time to definitive surgical debridement has been identified as a predictor for morbidity and mortality in necrotizing soft-tissue infection (NSTI). Rural patients are particularly at risk due to limited local resources, prolonged transport times, and access to care. The aim of this retrospective observational study was to examine the outcomes of NSTI requiring surgical treatment within the context of Montana’s diverse urban-rural and racial setting and patients’ preexisting conditions.
