Abstract/Description

There are large numbers of newborn infants that are under treated for neonatal hypoglycemia due to lack of education. The purpose of this project was to educate labor and delivery and/or maternal child nurses in order to increase knowledge of newborn hypoglycemia treatment using the American Academy of Pediatric Guidelines. The project included a PowerPoint presentation and a pamphlet provided to maternal-child and/or labor and delivery registered nurses in a rural hospital. A pre and post-test was used to evaluate the amount of knowledge learned from the educational course. The results indicated that there was a significant increase when comparing the total scores of the pre and posttests. The overall mean test scores increased from 48.75% to 95.79%. Implementation of these guidelines will decrease the number of untreated and persistent hypoglycemia. If left untreated, hypoglycemia can have both short term and long-term effects on the newborn, including NICU admission, mortality, brain injury, and adverse neurological outcomes that can impact the neonate well into childhood.
