Abstract/Description

Abstract

Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) are susceptible to increased stress due to the academic rigor, financial burden, and strained interpersonal relationships that are experienced during the academic program. Mindfulness techniques have been found useful in helping reduce stress in other similar groups. The purpose of this project is to explore the effectiveness of a mindfulness program on SRNAs. A ten-session mindfulness program using the Smiling Minds application was implemented. A pre and post test using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale- 21 (DASS-2) were given to determine the effect of the mindfulness program. The results of the project showed a statistically significant decrease in depression on the DASS-21 after the mindfulness intervention. The other areas observed did not produce a statistically significant change from the pre and post test results, but significant stress levels in SRNAs were found. Lack of participation in the mindfulness program is one of the main contributors to the lack of data obtained. Further research is needed in this area.
