Abstract/Description
Abstract
Aim(s): To provide education to obstetric nurses regarding complications of epidural pain management during labor.
Design/Methods: The project included a PowerPoint presentation to rural obstetric nurses regarding complications associated with epidural anesthesia. Participants were given a pre and post-test using the Qualtrics software to determine the effectiveness of the presentation.
Keywords: Obstetrics, Neuraxial Anesthesia, Epidural, Pain Management
Results: All participants stated they felt they had improved knowledge regarding anesthetic complications following the presentation. There was improvement in most responses between the pre and post-tests.
Conclusion: The presentation provided effective education to obstetric staff in their own opinions. There were significantly more responses on the pretest than the post-test therefore some of the results are skewed.
Implications for the profession and/or patient care: Providing education to obstetric nurses allows patients to be better informed before receiving or requesting anesthesia care while decreasing the incidence of unnecessary complications.
Impact: The nursing staff of the obstetric department in a rural hospital have a deficit in education regarding epidural complications in parturient patients. The goal of the project is to improve the knowledge of nursing staff regarding this issue.
Reporting Method: This project has adhered to EQUATOR guidelines.
Patient or Public Contribution: Participants of this study included nursing staff of a rural hospital. There was no patient or outside public contribution associated.
