Abstract/Description

A survey was sent out to the Murray State student population using the SONA database. Using the same data, two different studies were completed. The first study analyzed how parenting styles, coined by Baumrind, Maccoby, and Martin, affect attachment (secure and insecure) styles in romantic relationships within college students. The first hypothesis states that college students will have a more secure attachment within their romantic relationship if their parents’ parenting style was/is authoritative. The second hypothesis states that college students will have a less secure attachment within their romantic relationships if their parents’ parenting style was/is neglectful.

The second study analyzed how participation in hookup culture may affect emotional intimacy among adults. Over the past several years, hookup culture has become increasingly more popular to participate in, especially in college students. Emotional intimacy is a form of intimacy that plays an essential role in mental health and how satisfying a romantic relationship may feel. It was hypothesized that participation in hookup culture will negatively affect emotional intimacy.
